Loose Dirt: Trivia, Quotes and Marginalia

Buried Treasures

The Chicago Tribune Tempo cover story on Thursday, April 1, featured a custom casket design group named Art Caskets from WhiteLight. CEO Patrick Fant's company provides a way for people to go out in style with personalized painted coffins. The article featured images of caskets painted to: look like an Irish flag; represent a golf course for a model called "Fairway to Heaven;" and show a historical image of the Alamo for one called, "Lone Star." His design book includes several themes for coffin decoration, ranging from Nature and Religion, to specialized images of an "AIDS Awareness Ribbon."

Grinny's personal favorite is the first custom order from a man who is living and intends to have his wry vision revealed only after his death. His coffin is designed to look like a brown paper package that is stamped, in big red letters, "Return to Sender." (the original story was written by Paul Galloway).
