Loose Dirt: Trivia, Quotes and Marginalia

"The Graveyard of the Atlantic"

Sable Island, a twenty mile sandbar east of Halifax, Nova Scotia, is known as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic."  Five thousand men are said to have drowned in its shallows and at least that many have been pulled to safety by lifesaving crews that have been maintained there since 1801.  (From "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger)
